When you come right down to it, anyone really can start their own business because that is the easy part. The real test is can you maintain a business over time? It really comes down to who you are as a person and your personality.
A study done by the Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute found that there were certain traits that stood out among the most successful ventures (Entrepreneur.com). Although I am not going to list their specific list and instead create my own based on my own thoughts, I did want to attach their article for others to gander at.
My list of personalities traits needed to be successful are:
How does one be unique you may ask? Well, in my last blog I talked about how having a specific passion or skill makes you stand out, but I feel uniqueness can also be a personality trait as well. Unique to me means not fitting any mold and avoiding being a cookie-cutter of society standards. This in itself helps a lot of small business owners survive because they think outside the norm and it comes natural because they have already been doing this in every aspect of your life.
The moral is, your quirks can be an asset and it'll help you stand out in the crowd.
You can say that the man or woman who always is ahead of the game on trends seems to always get ahead and there is a point to be made with this. If you know in advance what may be coming down the pike, then you can, in fact, be the first in your area to create a small business and take over that sector before anyone else. I touched on this in my last blog about many fighting for the same business with the same ideas, but sometimes it really comes down to who gets there first and gains a following and it is usually the progressives who can see something up and coming and isn't afraid to go for it when it comes to a business.
Don't forget to make sure not to move TOO fast and miss out on a part of your business plan!
Note that I put mentally in parentheses. I say this because some people excel in "organized" clutter. For example, I myself cannot function in a sterile environment and by sterile I mean "a place for everything and everything in its place." By no means am I living in filth, but I do enjoy a lived-in type environment where I feel comfortable and am not afraid to get a speck of dirt on the floor. Anyways, going back to the idea of mentally organized, it really helps to be able to sort out everything mentally.
Although there are things such as organizers or even reminders set to phones and computers, those who cannot simply use their noggin as a means of organization really are going to have issues making sure all is done for their business (daily, weekly, monthly, etc.) if they need someone--or something else to do it for them.
By easy-going, I do not mean someone who is going to let life slip by and be afraid to start conflicts. What I do mean is someone who practices humility when it comes to their business. Not everything is going to run smoothly, things are going to happen, but a person who can laugh at them self is going to have a lot easier time bouncing back from negativity or a slip up than someone who messes up and goes home and eats a tub of ice cream out of self-pity (although who doesn't love ice cream).
You may stutter during an important business meeting, make a typo somewhere ONCE, mess up a customer's order, but none of these things will be the death of you as long as you can see the mistake, laugh it off and go back at it bigger and better than last time.
I think confident is a little overdone on these lists, but there is a reason why you see it on every "Important Traits for Small-Business Owner" type blogs and it is because it is important. If you aren't confident, then I doubt you will even get past the business plan itself because you will most likely talk yourself out of it before even starting. Confidence does not mean arrogance and there is an extreme difference between the two. Confidence is knowing something will work--but not knowing WHEN and still going through with it whereas arrogance is just assuming it will work and everyone will love your product and that's that--major difference!
Be confident in your business plan, be confident is your website template, be confident when addressing potential investors and customers, and be confident throughout the entire process. You can attach any of the above traits to confident and they all work together--confident and unique, confident and progressive, etc. can only bring positive outcomes, even if it takes a while to get there.
Although my list is not extensive and may be repetitive, I do feel these are the keys to being a small business owner because you are the face of your business and not some large enterprise. You need to be a specific type of person to be able to handle all the ups and downs of starting a small-business and while it may seem easy in theory, it really becomes harder once the website is up and the doors are open for business.
