2018 has begun and for many small business owners and freelancers, it is a fresh start to their last year of business. Did you get to work with client's you wanted to work with? Did you advance your career to new levels? Or did you feel like you could have done more in your work and business offerings?
Sometimes, we can be hard on ourselves as independent workers and feel like we could have done better and the reality is that there is always room for improvement, but you should not diminish your self-worth in the process of coming to new goals.
Not meeting a goal but at least trying to work towards it is an accomplishment in itself, so maybe in the new year, you find ways to attain that business goal for your company or freelancing endeavors.
Below are some small steps you can take to make 2018 a year you reach your goals:
Offer less, but offer more quality
Perhaps, you thought offering a wide variety of services was great, but you felt you did not do your best at the end of the year. You might want to look at what your small business is offering and scale back. If you are a freelancer, this may mean looking at what types of work you do and putting focus on your three best areas.
An example could be a clothing store, but you never seem to sell any of your baby clothes. Perhaps, eliminating the clothes or offering a smaller selection may help your overhead costs. For freelancers, you may offer social media marketing, management, paid marketing, and public relations, but never seem to do any public relations work. Taking it off your offering may be a small but liberating step to focus more on what you do best.
Create actionable goals
What is meant by actionable goals are goals you can work towards in increments. Sometimes, we create goals but the goal itself is very broad and does not have any sub-steps to take. If you want to make $20,000 more in your freelance work this year, what steps can you take? Can you add one two more clients at $10,000 a client? Could you ask current clients for more hours and work quarterly towards a $20,000 to make it a more organized approach to a large goal.
When we make a goal really large but do not set incremental goals and steps to it, it seems too large and sometimes we walk away from it. Dividing the main goal into smaller goals can make it seem more attainable and you can grow and alter the plan along the way.
Network with others in your field or in complementary fields
Sometimes, goals are simply not met because you did not have the support and guidance you needed to make them a reality. Networking and putting yourself and your work out there can be a great way to receive feedback, constructive criticism (when needed), and help towards reaching your goals.
If you are stumped on how to reach more clients, then joining a local chamber of commerce or niche-specific group could be a great way to meet people, make connections, and grow your own network. Expanding your networking outside of your own business, but perhaps to a networking group that complements your work is also a great way to get new and fresh ideas on how to reach the client's you want to reach. We all need a network and support system to reach our goals, even if we want to do the bulk of it on our own.
These are a few steps you can take in 2018 to reach new business goals in the new year. Any unmet goal is just a new opportunity to revamp the plan and execute the steps needed to reach. What goals do you have this year?
