One of the biggest factors in a person's happiness is job fulfillment. Based on a study by RealSociology, most working individuals will spend over 92,000 hours at work in a lifetime--so let's hope you love it.
Now, let's look at it from a small-business standpoint. You can, in theory, make your own hours if work is going well, you are in control, but then you are also possibly working alone and everything falls on you. It seems there are pros and cons to working for yourself, but in reality small business owners tend to not mind the negatives as the positives tend to outweigh them--based on findings on Entrepreneur.com by Yodle.
Yodle has interviewed 300 small business owners in the United States and found that over half were extremely happy with their work and the remaining 30 percent were simply happy. Only roughly the remaining ten percent were indifferent to unhappy. This can be very eye-opening as it shows that one can be happy even when all responsibility falls on them.
Beyond just that they are happy is why they are happy. Many small business owners stated that they do work less than 40 hours a week whereas their non-business owner counterparts are working 40+ hours. Almost 30% also stated that they typically enjoy a month vacation a year and are not capped at the typical 2-week vacation many companies offer their employees.
Besides these perks, small business owners simply enjoy "being the boss" and most interviewed stated they either would only sell their business if they were given an offer they could not refuse or would never consider it. So, it seems most business owners are content in what they do and plan to continue on without a second thought about returning to the work world.
*A fun fact about small business owners, but most still have not moved over into the technological world. With most relying on referrals or word of mouth to get their name out there. This approach is best left to those established businesses that already have a following whereas modern businesses are looked at differently without an online presence.
