A recent article by Jessica Stillman of Inc.com gave all of us at Socially Dedicated a reality check in our work as a small start-up business. Do we balance our work and life well and do we only have the ability to balance a couple of life's enjoyments as entrepreneurs? You decide.
We decided to rate and go over how well we accomplish each of the five top five pieces of life (work, sleep, family, fitness and friends).
Work: 10/10 I am always working on clients work or making sure Socially Dedicated is up to date with new content. I would say my mind starts work at 8 a.m. and does not shut off until 10 p.m.
Sleep: 3/10 Ugh caffeine, please?
Family: 7/10 I try to visit my parents once or twice a month. I would love to see them more, but I feel as an adult that is pretty typical so I gave myself a higher score.
Fitness: 6/10 My Planet Fitness membership was just started again and I am already slacking. I never go, but I do get a walk or run in daily and try to attend yoga or a free fitness event when I can. I think I do best in organized fitness solely because everything else is my life is a little all over the place.
Friends: 4/10 I try to see friends bi-weekly. Living in Philadelphia makes it easier and harder to see friends. Easier in terms of things to do, harder in terms of traffic and stop lights every 100 feet.
Work: 10/10 I always am either at work at my part-time job or doing side photography
Sleep: 6/10 I am usually exhausted after work so I have no trouble falling asleep. It's just the fact that I need to stay up until late hours which is why my score isn't higher.
Family: 6/10 I see my parents and grandparents about once every two months. My brother lives in Massachusetts so I can't get up there that often. I could do better.
Fitness: 5/10 I am basically an "in-shape, out-of-shape" human because I am super skinny, but also really not in the best shape. I walk daily, but that about does it.
Friends: 4/10 Hmm. It's just really hard to plan any sort of get together when you are constantly doing something. This is probably going to be my worst score, but I don't get to see friends that often.
Overall, our assessment shows that you really can only do well in a couple of instances and the others fall off simply because you are busy, tired and in need of rest. Life as an entrepreneur can be tough, but also rewarding.
